Poker is utterly unique among casino games because you are not playing against the house; you are playing against the other players sitting at the table.

Unfortunately, some players decide to cross the line from aggressive strategy into illegal or highly unethical behavior to secure an advantage.

If you are playing live poker in a casino, and especially in an unregulated underground home game, you must be your own first line of defense.

The Most Common Poker Scam: Collusion

The absolute most pervasive and difficult-to-prove form of cheating in modern poker is called "Collusion."

For example, stacking chips in a specific pattern, placing a drink on the left side of the cup holder, or scratching their nose can secretly broadcast "I hold an Ace."

Colluders will also use aggressive betting tactics, like "whipsawing," to trap an honest player between them.

If two players are incredibly friendly but never play massive pots against each other (often called "soft playing"), it is a massive red flag.

If the floor refuses to act, simply pick up your chips and leave the table immediately; you cannot beat a team.

Marked Cards and Physical Manipulation

While collusion is psychological, marking cards is a direct, physical assault on the integrity of the casino's equipment.

When the card is face down, the cheater can spot the tiny shadow of the dent or feel it physically when they handle the deck.

Another method is "daubing," where a player uses a tiny speck of ash or specialized grease on their finger to smudge a specific pattern on the back of a card.

Furthermore, actively inspect the backs of the cards when they are dealt to you.

In a casino, you have the absolute right to request a fresh deck of cards if you suspect the current deck is compromised.

Angle Shooting: The Unethical Grey Area

An "angle shooter" uses intentionally deceptive, unethical behavior to trick opponents or exploit loopholes in the strict rules of casino poker.

A classic angle shoot is the "pump fake" bet. A player grabs a massive stack of chips and aggressively thrusts their arm forward as if to bet, but stops just short of the betting line.

They use confusion and noise to give themselves an escape hatch when they make a bad decision.

An opponent might push all-in thinking they are calling a $100 bet, only to realize the angle shooter had a hidden $500 chip in the back.

Never flip your cards over until the dealer instructs you to do so, and always place your chips in neat, easily readable stacks.

Common Red Flags at the Table

• The Team Play: Watch for players who constantly make eye contact or use strange physical gestures immediately after looking at their cards.
